Success doesn’t happen overnight. Before many of the world’s most successful people made it to the top they often had to deal with many obstacles and challenges. Some of them even went through periods of their lives where they were homeless.

1. William Shatner
He’s best known for starring as Captain Kirk in Star Trek and his role on Rescue 911. What many people don’t know is that Star Trek was originally cancelled at the same time Shatner was going through a divorce, leaving him broke and homeless. Shatner was forced to live out of his pick-up truck.
2. Steve Jobs
He was a visionary, innovator, and Co-Founder of Apple. As a college drop out, Jobs slept on the floor of a friend’s dorm. He returned bottles to make money for food and walked seven miles once a week to get a free meal at the Hare Krishna temple.
3. Jim Carrey
Staring in movies like Ace Ventura, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and Liar Liar, Jim Carrey has certainly done well for himself. At one point during his life, Carrey and the rest of his family had to live in a tent in his sister’s back yard.
4. Tyler Perry
He has achieved massive success writing, producing and acting in numerous plays, films, and television shows. However, Perry had many difficult years on his journey to the top. Perry was physically and sexually abused by various relatives and neighbors throughout his childhood. He decided to leave home and tried to make it as a playwright. He spent several years living in his car, until he became successful.
5. John Paul DeJoria
He is the CEO of Paul Mitchell, but life wasn’t always so great for John Paul DeJoria. Growing up he lived in a foster home and was a member of an L.A. gang. By the time he was 22 he was homeless. He then started John Paul Mitchell Systems in 1980 with hairdresser Paul Mitchell achieving great success.
6. Halle Berry
Oscar winner Halle Berry has starred in many blockbuster hits, but she struggled early on in her career. When she was 21 she moved to Chicago and ran out of money. She asked her mom for help, but she refused. With no place to go Halle was forced to live in a shelter.
7. Sam Worthington
Known for his role in Avatar, Sam Worthington sold all his belongings to pursue an acting career. Until he was cast for his role in Avatar he slept on the couches of friends and accquaintences.
8. Dr. Phil McGraw
Dr. Phil has done extremely well for himself as the advice giving guru to America. But growing up him and his Dad found themselves homeless. With no place to go they lived in a car until they were able to get a room at a YMCA fo five dollars a week.
9. Drew Carey
When Carey’s father passed away, Carey nowhere to go and was forced to fend for himself. He was 18, homeless and in order to make money he sold his own blood plasma. He survived by eating Kraft dinners to feed himself until he moved in with his brother in California.
10. David Letterman
He grew up in Indiana and worked as a radio show host after college. But Letterman had a dream of making it as a comedian, so he left Indiana for Los Angeles where he lived in his pick-up truck until he made it big.
