We all have goals, dreams, and ideas of great things we want to accomplish in 2017. Unfortunately, we also have a lot of lame excuses of why we shouldn’t start pursuing these goals, dreams, and ideas.
We delay. We procrastinate. Nothing gets done and the dreams remain dreams, goals remain goals, and the ideas, if not forgotten, remain just ideas.
If you want to crush it in 2017, or at any time in your life, there’s one rule that you MUST follow.
That rule is the Five Second Rule.
No, not the Five Second Rule where if you drop some food on the floor and pick it up within five seconds it’s still okay to eat. That “Five Second Rule” is false by the way, but that’s another blog topic. I’m talking about a completely different Five Second Rule that if you start using it, you will accomplish great things in your life.
I first heard about this rule when watching a TED talk by Author, relationship expert, and Life Coach, Mel Robbins. You can check out her TED talk here. According to Mel, “Anytime you have an idea that seems like a sure thing, act to advance it within five seconds. Why? Because your brain’s main job is to avoid trouble and risk, so in less than five seconds it will persuade you to abandon your idea.”
We come up with ideas all the time that we put off and never do anything about. All because we wait…we delay…we procrastinate. We convince ourselves not to.
Mel continues, “Typically these good ideas start with I should. As in: I should introduce myself to that stranger during a networking opportunity. I should jog. I should skip dessert. I should update my résumé. I should start my book. I should write a business plan.”
If you tell yourself “I should” you have five seconds to act on it before your brain pulls the “emergency brake” and tells you not to do it.
Stop self-sabotaging yourself. Stop pulling the emergency brake and act on your ideas with five seconds. Even if you just write the idea down, it’s making progress in the right direction.
Using this rule you will be forcing yourself into action…forcing yourself to step outside your comfort zone and make your goals, dreams, and ideas happen.
So, if you have goals, dreams, and ideas of great things you want to accomplish in 2017, don’t come up with excuses of why you shouldn’t act.
So make the difficult phone call, apply to your dream job, introduce yourself, start your business… Don’t put them off. Act on it within five seconds.
